Matthew L. Flower, Candidate for Magisterial District Judge, 03-3-02 – Northampton County
Mar 31, 2025
My path to public service has been shaped by real-world experience and a deep respect for the principles of fairness and due process. As a proud member of Teamsters Local 773, I’ve developed a strong understanding of the workplace, the people who keep it running, and the importance of making sure procedures are followed the right way.
Over time, I’ve become deeply involved in the day-to-day operations that affect my coworkers. Today, I have the honor of serving as a Teamsters Union Steward, where I advocate for employees, help resolve disputes, and ensure that everyone understands their rights and protections under the contract.
My role is more than representation—it's about clarity, discipline, and process. I work to ensure that contract language is followed, filings are accurate, and that no one is left confused or unheard. These responsibilities reflect the very same principles that I believe must guide a District Judge.
What makes my experience unique is perspective. I’ve worked both in management and as a union employee, giving me insight into how decisions affect people at every level of an organization. I’ve sat at the table when tough calls had to be made, and I’ve stood beside workers to protect their rights and ensure fair treatment.
In addition to my professional background, I’ve also had personal experiences with the legal system that have given me a deeper appreciation for how important it is for people to feel respected, informed, and treated with dignity. I’ve stood on the other side of the bench, and I understand how overwhelming the system can feel.
That perspective is not just valuable—it’s essential in a judge.
My work as a steward has shown me that the foundation of fairness lies in structure and due process. I interpret rules, resolve disputes, and make sure people are treated consistently—without favoritism or shortcuts.
This work is, in many ways, a grassroots form of adjudication. It requires me to listen carefully, remain calm under pressure, and apply clear procedures even when the issues are emotional or complex. These same skills are critical to the role of a District Judge.
“The process can be confusing and overwhelming for a lot of people—but Matt always takes the time to explain what’s going on. He makes sure every employee understands their rights and what to expect. I think judges should do the same thing—make sure everyone in their courtroom understands what’s happening. That’s why I trust Matt to serve with fairness and clarity.”
— James Terpe, Teamsters Local 773 Member
“I’ve worked with Matt in my position on the management side, and I’ve always respected how he handles himself. He’s firm when he needs to be, but he’s not looking to escalate things—he’s looking to get it right. He knows the contract, he follows procedure, and he treats people with respect. That kind of even-handed approach is exactly what you'd want from someone on the bench.”
— Zachary Clark, UPS Management, Bethlehem Township
As your District Judge, I will bring not just legal knowledge—but lived experience. I’ve helped resolve difficult issues through structure and fairness. I’ve protected rights by following rules, and I’ve always made sure the people I represent feel informed and respected.
I know what it’s like to be on the other side of the bench. I know how important it is for the justice system to work not just efficiently—but with professionalism and respect.
I’ve seen what justice looks like when it works—and I’m ready to make sure it works for everyone.
